Traditional owners seek talks on land permit changes

Some Yunyuwa traditional owners have asked for consultation on the proposed changes to the permit system for Aboriginal land.

Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Mal Brough this week put forward a discussion paper outlining five possible changes.

The changes include scrapping permits for the media, allowing open access to town centres or scrapping the permit system altogether.

Traditional owner Leonard Norman says most Indigenous communities are unaware of the proposed changes.

"This is where the breakdown comes down is the lack of communication - people aren't consulting with the people here," he said.

"We haven't been told about that and it's something, its something that is going to be affecting us."

Another traditional owner, David Harvey, says he too is concerned at the lack of consultation.

"We didn't know anything about these changes, we are only just hearing it right now," he said.

"We don't really want these changes to happen. We want the permit system to stay in place as it is."
