Opposition worried farmers missing out on vegetation compo package

The Queensland Opposition says nearly three-quarters of the Government's vegetation management compensation package still has not been spent five months out from the close of applications.

A total of $130 million is on offer to farmers who are prevented from broadscale land clearing under the new laws.

Opposition natural resources spokesman Ray Hopper says the criteria for payments is too tough.

"I've had a number of phone calls from property owners - they are very concerned because the excuses they have been given as to why they've been knocked back," he said.

"It seems a lot of applications are being knocked back for very small reasons. It's almost as if when the five months is up the money from the $130 million I feel will go into consolidated revenue."

Natural Resources Minister Kerry Shine says he is confident the money will be distributed to farmers by the end of the program.
