MP says Koori court must be compulsory

The independent Member for Mildura, Russell Savage, says a new Koori court for children in the north-west Victorian city will only work if it is compulsory.

The State Government plans to open the state's second children's Koori court at Mildura by the end of next year.

An adult Koori court is planned for Swan Hill within two years.

Mr Savage says if the Koori system is compulsory for Indigenous children attending court it will be effective.

"We have an epidemic of Indigenous crime mostly by children here in Mildura and we need a system of dealing with that and the Children's Koori Court will be appropriate," he said.
