Imelda Marcos cleared of corruption

The former first lady of the Philippines, Imelda Marcos, has been found not guilty in one of dozens of corruption cases against her.

Ms Marcos had been accused of holding shares in a Government corporation while serving in the Cabinet in 1977, which is against national law.

Her family is accused of misappropriating billions of dollars of state funds.

The court said state prosecutors had failed to establish their case because the Government corporation Ms Marcos was running was a non-stock and non-profit entity and would not constitute corruption.

In court the former first lady, dazzling in a pair of diamond and jade earrings, wept and whispered a prayer after hearing the news.

Famous for her vast shoe collection and her fabulous jewels, she said: "I know God is always on the side of the right".

The state agency pursuing the wealth the Marcos family is accused of amassing says it has recovered about $1 billion of the $10 billion so far.
