House goes pink for breast cancer awareness

Parliament House in Darwin will tonight be bathed in pink light in support of breast cancer awareness.

The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Jane Aagaard, says the occasion serves as a reminder that almost one in 11 women is diagnosed with breast cancer.

"I guess having the Parliament, which is an iconic building in the Northern Territory, turned pink is a reminder to women to be very vigilant about checking their breasts regularly and if there are any changes to make sure that they get medical advice," she said.

"Breast cancer is the most common cancer amongst women but it's also one which has had a lot of research done on it.

"It does mean that if the cancer is caught early that you have a very good chance of living for a longish period of time."
