Group angered over resumption of live exports to Egypt

Animal rights groups are disappointed the Federal Government has signed an agreement on animal exports with Egypt.

The memorandum of understanding paves the way for livestock exports to resume within weeks.

Trade was suspended earlier this year after Australian television broadcast images of cattle being treated below industry standards.

Animals Australia director Glenys Oogjes wants a permanent ban on live exports to Egypt.

"It's very difficult in another country to enforce standards that does not have a history of animal welfare such as in Australia," she said.

"They don't even have an enforceable animal welfare act, so we can not envisage a situation where the welfare of our animals can be ensured in that place."
