CCTV may show Russian journalist's killer

Russian police have released security footage of the chief suspect in the murder of high-profile investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya.

CCTV footage from the building shows a man in a baseball cap following Ms Politkovskaya inside just before she was shot on Saturday in the lift of her Moscow apartment building.

The video shows a young man wearing dark clothing and a baseball cap.

Supporters at home and governments around the world have reacted with outrage at the murder of Ms Politkovskaya, who won praise and many awards for reporting human rights abuses in Chechnya.

Hundreds of people have gathered in Moscow to pay tribute to Ms Politkovskaya.

The 48-year-old mother of two was a fierce critic of Russia's actions in Chechnya and this week she was due to publish an article on torture and kidnappings in Chechnya.

Outside her apartment building people laid flowers, while in central Moscow others lit candles and held posters describing the killing as politically motivated.

"I listened to her only two days ago and I prayed, God protect her for us - I find it very painful," said one mourner.

"She did a lot for Russia - really, a lot - I wish God gave us more such journalists, that would make life in Russia more democratic, easier and much more fair," said another.

Chechen Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov has described her murder as a great tragedy and Moscow's prosecutor-general has taken personal charge of the investigation.

The Kremlin has made no comment.
