Blair praises UK soldiers in Afghanistan

British Prime Minister Tony Blair says fighting against Taliban forces in Afghanistan has been very tough.

In an interview broadcast to British forces around the world, Mr Blair has paid tribute to the courage of the troops.

The broadcast coincides with five years of military involvement in Afghanistan, and Mr Blair has used it to promise extra resources.

He says the mission of those fighting in Afghanistan is of fundamental importance and they will get back-up if it is needed.

"Our troops have been extraordinary there, I mean truly courageous to a degree that should give this country enormous pride," he said.

"If the commanders on the ground want more equipment, armoured vehicles for example, more helicopters, that will be provided.

"Whatever package they want we will do."
