Alice Springs cuts back green waste project
The Alice Springs Town Council has had to scale back a major recycling project because it is no longer economically viable.
The council took on the green waste project two years ago, selling mulch back to residents as a water-saving exercise.
Mayor Fran Kilgariff says the project has incurred increasing costs for some time and the mulch will now only be used by the council.
"Over the past couple of years we've looked very intensively into how to make it a profitable and viable business and it just hasn't seemed possible for that to happen," she said.
"The loss has continued. The council management did all that they could to actually make it viable so we've just had to take the decision to come to this."
