Abortion doctor banned from NSW practice for 10 years

A Sydney doctor who was found guilty of procuring an illegal abortion will not be able to apply to practice medicine again in New South Wales for 10 years.

Dr Suman Sood is awaiting sentencing on charges that she unlawfully performed an abortion on a woman who was five months pregnant.

After her conviction earlier this year in the Supreme Court, Dr Sood withdrew her name from the Medical Register, but the Health Care Complaints Commission still proceeded with a prosecution in the Medical Tribunal.

The case related to 11 complaints made by five of her patients.

Today the tribunal has ordered that Dr Sood be banned from re-registering as a medical practitioner for 10 years.

It described her as an incompetent and dishonest medical practitioner, who has serious flaws in ability and character.

Dr Sood was not in court to hear the decision.
